Abrasions & Their Cure Using Wound-Be-Gone

Superficial damage or injury of skin in dermatology is called “Abrasion” Which is no deeper than outer layer of skin epidermis. It is less severe than by blunt impact causing Tearing of skin and sub-cutaneous tissues with minimal bleeding. Mild abrasions are commonly known as a grazes, scrapes or scratch.

Normally caused by a glancing impact across the surface of the skin, but if the force is directed vertically down onto the skin surface it may be termed a ‘crush’ injury.

It may be ‘linear’, or commonly known as a single ’scratch’, whereas if a broader surface is affected, it is called a ‘graze’ or ‘brush abrasion’ (eg where a cyclist is thrown and comes into contact with the road surface in a skidding fashion). Such an abrasion often covers a relatively large area of skin, and is often called a ‘friction burn’ in lay language.

The wound damages only the epidermis (uppermost skin layer), and should not therefore bleed. However, abrasions do causing slight bleeding.

If the surface of an abrasion is examined closely with a hand-held magnifying glass, the direction of force can often be determined, from the torn epidermis. Strands are drawn towards the end of the injury, and are ‘heaped up’. The edges of the wound may also be ragged and directed towards the end of the wound.

Abrasion should be cleaned and any debris removed. Dressing the wound is optional but helps to keep the wound from drying out which interferes with healing. Usual treatment of abrasions and road rash included treating the area by cleaning the wound with mild soap and water or wash like hydrogen peroxide, and then covering the area with Wound Be Gone. However, it has been found that the use of antiseptics such as hydrogen peroxide may actually cause harm to the tissue and interfere with the healing process.

After an abrasion, the layers of damaged skin will heal from the deeper layers to the surface layers and from the outer edges to the center. When healing process begins, the area of the abrasion may look pink and raw, new skin would be pink and smooth.

It is possible to prevent from abrasions by wearing protective pads and covering any exposed skin with a layer of clothing. Generally, you can predict when you will suffer an abrasion. So it is wise to have the necessary first aid supplies available in the event of an emergency.

The epidermis is the outer layer of the skin composed of terminally differentiated stratified squamous epithelium acting as the body’s major barrier against an inhospitable environment.

Tearing of skin and sub-cutaneous tissues caused by blunt impacts are called lacerations.

The abrasion should be cleaned and any debris removed. A topical antibiotic should be applied to prevent infection and to keep the wound moist. Dressing the wound is optional but helps to keep the wound from drying out which interferes with healing. If the abrasion is painful, a topical analgesic (such as lidocaine or benzocaine) can be applied, but for large abrasions a systemic analgesic may be necessary.

Wound-Be-Gone gel is clinically proven to help in accelerated healing of abrasions. This gel doesn’t contain any biochemical substances and is thus safe to be used by people of all ages.

Wound-Be-Gone gel provides relief from pain and has no side effects. It helps in preventing scar formation which could appear due to abrasions. For its best results, Wound-Be-Gone should be used with proper guidance from a physician.
