Venous Ulcer is a Type of Venous Disorder

Venous ulcers are also known as varicose ulcers and are caused due to venous insufficiency. Venous insufficiency is defined as improper flow of blood from legs back to the heart. Venous valves prevent backflow of blood and in venous ulcers they do not function properly and so cause pressure in veins to increase. This problem affects the lower extremes normally legs and are quite painful. Another name of venous ulcer is stasis leg ulcer as they affect the lower part of leg and normally exists between ankles and calf.

Proper treatment and care of venous ulcer is necessary to heal up the wounds and prevent recurrence of this disease. This disease is more common in old aged people. In venous ulcers the blood pools into the veins instead of going back and form sores or wounds on the skin. Chronic venous ulcers can change into skin cancer if not taken care of. The tissues get damaged because of lack of oxygen due to the swelling in veins. The swelling is a result of movement of blood to the surrounding veins and not in the veins where they are supposed to flow in and out.

This is a category of venous disorder that causes leg ulcer. The common symptoms of venous ulcer is the appearance of white scars on the skin, swelling of legs, shedding of skin that reveals inner tissue and pain, itching and color of area on the leg changes to dark reddish brown. The skin around the effected area becomes firm and tender. In some cases varicose veins often appear in venous ulcers. If ulcer becomes infected then pus or fluid may pour out from the ulcer.

Venous ulcers take time to heal up and can occur again after healing. The main treatment of venous ulcer is to reduce swelling and prevent it from infection. Its treatment is not possible without a doctor’s help. The ulcer wound should be kept clean to keep it away from infections. Changing the dressing of ulcer is recommended. Venous ulcers are often very painful and can effect walking. The leg with ulcer should be kept elevated but it should be treated quickly otherwise it can do much damage to the leg and tissue. Compression bandages should be used to treat venous ulcers. In some cases you may be advised to go for surgery especially when the veins under skin are problematic.

The time taken by ulcer to heal up depends upon factors like; the size of ulcer, the treatment used including bandages used skin grafting and the condition of tissues under the skin. The blood circulation can be improved by using compression bandages. Moreover regular dressing, balanced diet and rest are good for speeding up the recovery time. Wound-be-gone can be used in these type of venous disorders as it relieves pain and itching, moreover it reduces swelling and gives the wound a protective coating that protects it from external elements and damages. However the varicose ulcer can come back at the same spot or on other parts of body. But wound-be-gone is very effective and prevents recurrence of venous ulcers.
