Cold Sore
Cold sores are puss filled blisters that form on the lips, or on the edge of the lips, as a result of a viral infection. This infection is actually a type of Herpes virus, called Type 1 Herpes. This is not the same virus that causes more serious problems, including genital herpes. Rather, Type 1 Herpes is a virus that can be caught any time in life, even in childhood, through sharing a drink, or using a drinking fountain, among other things. This virus can lay dormant inside the body for years, suddenly surfacing in the form of a cold sore. These sores, sometimes called fever blisters, are unattractive and painful. Cold sores are very common, and unfortunately, incurable. However, there are ways to reduce occurrences, shorten outbreak duration, and treat current sores. Cold sores usually heal on their own within seven to ten days. However, for frequent recurrences, a doctor can prescribe anti-viral medication that will reduce break-outs and speed healing time - a bit. Sore pain can sometimes be relieved through the application of various ointments, such as Lidocaine or benzyl alcohol. Wound-Be-Gone® is a very effective treatment for cold sores; while it cannot heal the viral infection, it does coat the sore, preventing the sore from crusting over. This stops the development of painful cracks, accelerating healing, and preventing scars from forming.
